The allocation will support walking and cycling infrastructure across the Premier County and forms part of a nationwide investment of €360 million.
The funding includes €500,000 specifically earmarked for Greenway development, supporting key local routes such as the Cashel to Cahir Greenway and sections of the Suir Blueway, including works in Clonmel, Marlfield, Cahir, and Carrick-on-Suir.
It will also strengthen the county’s capacity to plan and deliver active travel projects.
Tipperary Fine Gael Deputy Michael Murphy welcomed the announcement, saying, “These Active Travel projects will deliver real improvements in towns and villages right across Tipperary.
"Major schemes in Clonmel, Killenaule, Newtown, and Ardfinnan, along with other investment through the Safe Routes to School programme, will make it safer for children, families, and older people to walk and cycle in their own communities.”
Deputy Murphy added, “This investment will improve everyday connectivity, support healthier travel choices, strengthen local tourism and small businesses, and enhance quality of life right across Tipperary while ensuring the county continues to benefit from balanced regional investment and move towards more sustainable transport.”
Nationally, Ministers Darragh O’Brien, Seán Canney, and Jerry Buttimer confirmed that €360 million will support walking and cycling projects across Ireland.
The National Transport Authority’s Active and Sustainable Transport Investment Programme has been allocated €290 million to fund almost 1,000 projects, including major schemes in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Waterford. A further €8 million will support smaller behavioural change and training programmes, while €62 million will be dedicated to Greenway development nationwide.
Officials highlighted that the 2026 funding is expected to deliver 200 kilometres of walking and cycling infrastructure nationwide, contributing to the Government’s climate and road safety targets while providing communities with safe, sustainable transport options.
