The Village Market in Holycross has closed, bringing an end to a community initiative that became a well established feature of village life.
The final market took place on December 13, marking the conclusion of a project that began during the Covid-19 pandemic and evolved into a regular monthly gathering.

According to the organisers, the market emerged as a volunteer led response to the restrictions of the pandemic.
During that period, it provided an outlet for community interaction, allowed craftspeople to showcase their work and enabled home bakers and food producers to sell their goods.
Over time, it helped several traders develop into successful independent operations.
Operating on a not for profit basis, the market also raised funds for a range of initiatives and charities, maintaining what organisers described as a generous ethos throughout its lifetime.
The monthly event became a regular social occasion and a valued entry in the Holycross calendar.
In a statement marking the closure, the committee said:
"Since its establishment, the Holycross Village Market has provided a welcoming space for local traders, craftspeople, food producers, and community groups, while offering residents and visitors an opportunity to meet, connect, and support local enterprise.”
The organisers went on to acknowledge those who contributed to the market’s success.
“The organisers wish to sincerely thank all stallholders, volunteers, musicians, and supporters who contributed to the success of the market throughout its lifetime. Special appreciation is also extended to the wider community and loyal customers whose continued support helped sustain the market over the years.”
They added that while the decision to close was difficult, the market had reached a natural conclusion.
“While the committee has taken the tough decision that the market has now run it's course and comes to an end, its impact on community spirit and local enterprise in Holycross will be fondly remembered.”
In a separate note of thanks, the Village Market team expressed gratitude to everyone who supported the initiative, saying it had been a privilege to share so many Saturdays focused on local food, craft and community, and thanking supporters for their kindness and encouragement over the years.
