Inch House, Thurles and Country Choice in Nenagh were named as food hero's at a gala dinner in Dublin last week after receiving Good Food Ireland International Ambassador status thanks to ten years of championing Irish produce.
Nora Egan of Inch House said the award came as a “total shock” and that they were honoured to have been recognised by Good Food Ireland for their work.
“I didn't expect it at all. We knew there were awards being handed out for we didn't know what for. We're thrilled to be recognised at this level.”
“These awards really put you on the map but they do make things very busy as people hear about it and then want to make a booking but I love what I do so I'm delighted,” she said.
“My daughter Maureen is now taking over making our black puddings so she will be the third generation of women in the family to carry on the tradition so it's a very exciting time,” added Nora of the family's award winning recipe. The Thurles restaurant along with Nenagh's Country Choice which is run by Peter and Mary Ward were selected as food ambassadors alongside the likes of Darina Allen and Rory O’ Connell, Ballymaloe Cookery School, Martin Shanahan of the Fishy Fishy Cafe and Birgitta Hedin-Curtin of the Burren Smokehouse for their commitment to Irish produce over the last decade.
Speaking at the awards ceremony in Croke Park Margaret Jeffares, Founder of Good Food Ireland told a packed audience that it was important to recognise all those who have worked tirelessly over the past decade to establish Ireland as a food destination.
“Many individuals joined our pioneering efforts ten years ago to grow Ireland’s reputation internationally as a food tourism destination. In ten years I have seen great change and applaud everyone who has made this happen. We are a great country with great food and great people at the heart of it, visitors are now looking for authenticity and it is our aim to stand up and be counted for.”
This is one of the latest awards for the Country Choice cafe and shop having been included on the Taste.ie list of top food stores in Ireland this September while the much loved Inch House and restaurant received national attention last year when Daniel O'Donnel and wife Majella stopped by to film for their road trip around Ireland series.
