HSE urges more use of Nenagh Hospital's Local Injury Clinic

Nenagh Hospital: people are being encouraged to use its Local Injury Clinic

The HSE is encouraging more people to use its Local Injury Clinic at Nenagh Hospital rather than clog up emergency departments in Limerick and elsewhere.

The call comes after the agency revealed that a total of 8,051 people used the facility last year.

“We know from feedback received that our patients generally have a very positive experience. We really want to make sure that everyone knows just what our Injury Unit does and the efficient and high quality care patients will receive when they attend,” said Dr Damien Ryan, consultant in Emergency Medicine for Nenagh Injury Unit.

The unit is open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm and can treat adults and children aged five and over.

Injury units are designed and equipped for the treatment of patients with broken bones, dislocations, sprains, strains, wounds, scalds and minor burns that are unlikely to need overnight admission to hospital.

Staff members perform x-rays, reduce joint dislocations, apply plaster casts and treat wounds by stitches or other means.

They have swift access to diagnostics including x-ray and laboratory tests and some have rapid access to physiotherapy services.

The units are staffed by consultant-led teams of doctors with advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, radiographers and physiotherapists.

Patients can go directly to the Unit or be referred by a GP.

There is no charge for patients with full medical cards or those patients with valid medical / GP referral letter.
