Fine Gael to hold selection convention on Thursday if election called.
Tipperary Fine Gael will hold a selection convention on Thursday if the government falls on Tuesday and a snap general election is called before Christmas.
Fine Gael at national level has instructed that conventions be held across the country in the likelihood of an election being called in the wake of the Frances Fitzgerald email controversy.
Some are scheduled for tonight or Tuesday but the Tipperary one will now take place in the Premier Hall in Thurles on Thursday at 8pm in the event of an election being called.
Tipperary is different from most other constituencies as there are no outgoing TDs.
Seven candidates are seeking the nomination - they are former TD Noel Coonan; councillors Michael Fitzgerald, Michael Murphy and Mary 'Hanna' Hourigan; Garret Ahearn, son of the late TD Theresa Ahearn; Mary Newman, a sister of Dublin TD Kate O'Connell; and Shelagh Marshall.
If an election isn't called this week, then the final Tipperary election hustings scheduled for Clonmel next Monday is likely to go ahead.
