Tipperary weather alert - snow and ice warning remains as temperatures could hit minus 8 tonight

A status orange weather warning remains in place for Tipperary as heavy rain hit the south of the county overnight.

Met Eireann has said that heavy snow that hit the west and midlands overnight may move southwards.

And it is expected that temperatures could drop to minus 2 to minus 8 tonight.

South Tipperary experienced heavy rain overnight but hail and snow may follow this morniing.

As Ireland woke up to severe snow and frost this morning, the  snow and ice warning remains in for Tipperary Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Galway, Mayo and Roscommon .

The snow will lead to slippery paths and treacherous roads throughout today but at the moment gardaí in the midlands say all national primary routes are passable.

Met Eireanan say that gradually during the day the rain, sleet and snow will move to the south of the country.

There is a mixture of weather across the country this morning from icy conditions and sunny weather. Over many other areas there has been some very heavy rain during the night up to 30mm since midnight. That rain has converted to snow over many midland and western areas.

Frost will be widespread by this evening. It will be bitterly cold as temperatures drop sharply everywhere this evening and tonight ranging from -2C to -8C. There will be widespread severe frost and ice with dangerous conditions on untreated surfaces tonight and throughout rush-hour tomorrow.
