Met Eireann issues two weather warnings as storm Eleanor heads for Tipperary

As Storm Eleanor heads towards Ireland today Met Eireann have issued two weather warnings of lashing rain, high seas and winds of up to 130kmph.

A Status Orange wind warning was issued at 5am (Tuesday morning) for Leinster, Munster and south Galway.

The warning states: "Storm Eleanor will move in off the Atlantic later this afternoon and will move very quickly across the country this evening.

"Southwest to west winds of mean speeds 65 to 80 kmph, gusting to 110 to 130 kmph, are expected. Very high seas along Atlantic coasts, with a risk of coastal flooding also".

A second Status Yellow wind warning has been issued for the entire country which will come into effect from 4pm and last until 9pm.

The forecaster says: "Southwest to west winds of mean speeds 55 to 65 kmph, gusting 90 to 110 kmph, will develop later this afternoon and evening and will continue overnight and through Wednesday.

"A period of stronger winds are expected for a short time later today and this evening".

We will experience heavy rain this morning but this will soon give way to sunny spells and showers.

However, the storm will start moving in this afternoon, bringing heavy thundery rain from the Atlantic and some spot flooding.

Met Eireann advises: "Strong to gale force and blustery southwest winds will develop later this afternoon over Munster and Leinster, veering westerly this evening, associated with storm Eleanor, giving some damaging gusts and also high seas on Atlantic coasts.

Tonight will be extremely windy and blustery in all areas overnight, with the strongest of the winds early tonight along the east coast and also in Atlantic coastal counties, with a risk of coastal flooding possible.

We will also see some squally showers, hail and thunder in places.
