Garret Ahearn.
Son of former TD Theresa Ahearn, and Councillor Liam Ahearn secured the party nomination at the Selection Convention in Thurles last evening.
The son of former South Tipperary TD, Theresa Ahearn has won the right to contest the next General Election for the Fine Gael party following the Selection Convention held in The Premier Hall, Thurles last night.
Garret Ahearn, son of former Councillor Liam Ahearn, beat off six other contenders to get his name on the ticket, including former TD Noel Coonan. The result was not known until well into the early hours, by which time, most of the huge attendance had long since gone home. A re-count was called for at 1:00am and it took some hours thereafter for the result to become known, with Mary Newman coming second in the race.
It is likely that party headquarters will add another name to the ticket, but this will not be known for some time yet. Geography and gender will, more than likely come into the equation at the next stage.
