Breaking: Tipperary / Offaly TD Carol Nolan, suspended by Sinn Fein for voting against holding referendum

Deputy Carol Nolan

Sinn Fein TD Carol Nolan, who represents the party in the Lower Ormond part of the Tipperary / Offaly constituency, has been suspended by the party for three months after she voted against the holding of a referendum to repeal the Eight Amendment in the Dail this Wednesday.

Sinn Féin supports repealing the Eighth Amendment, and Deputy Nolan voted against the Referendum Bill, the only Sinn Féin TD to do so.

The party supports repealing the Eight Amendment, and adopted its position at its Ardfheis.

She was told of her suspension by Sinn Féin whip Aengus Ó Snodaigh.

In a statement party leader Mary Lou McDonald said: “People across society have deep and sincerely held views on the Eighth Amendment. I recognise and respect that fact. Carol holds strong, personal convictions on this matter. At all stages, the party has acknowledged and respected her views and her right to articulate those views.

“However, Sinn Féin elected representatives are expected to respect policy decisions taken by the Ardfheis and to vote in line with party policy. All Sinn Féin elected representatives, including members of the Oireachtas, are aware of this."

Ms McDonald described Deputy Nolan as a valued colleague and said she very much regretted this turn of events.

“However, as legislators we have a responsibility to vote as we are mandated by long standing Sinn Féin policy, a policy which we strongly believe is in the best interests of women," said the SF leader.
