One of Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Mart’s directors has thanked and paid tribute to the farmers and other members of the public who have offered assistance and support to them in the wake of the fire that extensively damaged the mart on Monday night.
John Curran of Carrick-on-Suir Livestock Sales Ltd said they were inundated with offers of help and support on the night of the fire and the following day.
"What amazed me was the speed at which the news travelled. I was only at the Mart three quarters of an hour on Monday night and farmers from Grangemockler, Piltown and Co. Waterford took the time and trouble to get into their cars and come down and offer us help and support.
"Thanks be to God we have very loyal customers supporting us. My phone is ringing off the hook all day with offers of help. "
He said it was devastating to see the damage to the Mart and they were in a state of shock. "It's just sad to see 63 years of work destroyed but at least nobody was hurt. That is an important thing. I know it's only a building."
The fire at the John Street based mart was reported to emergency services around 7pm on Monday and took firefighters more than four hours to put under control.
