‘Progress’ on Tipperary town bypass as €25,000 is allocated for the N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction project

Cashel Tipperary Municipal District has received a response from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) regarding the proposed bypass for Tipperary town.

Councillors and public representatives have long campaigned for such a bypass, citing heavy traffic, pollution, and retailing concerns.

At this month's meeting of the local authority, Cllr Roger Kennedy welcomed the response saying it was progress.

At an earlier meeting, Cllr Kennedy had asked that the authority write to the TII concerning the project which has faced long delays due to lack of funding.

Mark Byrne, of TII's Regulatory and Administration Unit, wrote a response to the Municipal District on March 26th.

“Thank you for your letter of 12 March 2018 regarding a bypass of Tipperary town along the N/M24. The position in relation to your enquiry is as follows,” says Mr Byrne.

“The recently published National Development Plan (NDP), which has been developed by Government to underpin the successful implementation of the new National Planning Framework, provides the strategic and financial framework for TII's national roads programme for the period from 2018 to 2027.

“The proposed N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction project, which includes a bypass for Tipperary Town, is included amongst a number of major national road schemes that were identified for progression through the pre-appraisal and early planning during 2018.

“In this regard, TII has provided an allocation of €25,000 to Limerick City and Co. Council this year for N24 Cahir to Limerick Junction project.

“The proposed scheme will be subject to pre-appraisal to establish compliance with the requirements of the Public Spending Code and Common Appraisal Framework for Transport Projects and Programmes and to determine the prioritisation of the projects to be developed during the period of the NDP,” concluded Mr Byrne.
