Choirs from around North Tipperary will gather in Nenagh's St Mary of the Rosary Church this Thursday, May 24, for a special concert reflecting the theme of family and home.

Almost 70 singers have already entertained people in Ss Peter and Paul's Church, Borriskane, with their Songs of Family and Home concert, which marked the Special Year of the Family and homelessness.

The joint choir from the Odhran and Cois Deirge parish clusters entertained their audience in Borrisokane last Thursday with such songs as Home, Sweet Home, Westering Home, Trasna na dTonnta, Speed Your Journey and Beautiful Isle of Somewhere.

There were solo items also from some choir members and a taste of Irish dance from Ella Kennedy who took us back to memories of River Dance with her hard foot tapping.

Narrators for the night were Bawney Hayes and Liz Gleeson and musical accompanists were John Armitage and Luke O'Connor on keyboard; Maire Hanley on violin and tin whistle; Tom William and Ann Spain on guitar.

The audience reaction was fantastic, with the performers getting a standing ovation

After the final song Triona O'Connor, project leader for the Mid-West Services with Focus Ireland, spoke about the work that Focus Ireland does.

The concert, which raised funds for Focus Ireland, will be repeated this Thursday when funds raised will go towards the Peter McVerry Trust. Fr McVerry will attend the concert and speak afterwards about the trust's work.

The concert starts at 8pm.
