Strong 'YES' vote emerging from Tipperary in abortion referendum according to early tallies

Early tallies are indicating a strong 'YES' vote from Tipperary with some boxes showing a 60 percent vote in favour of repealing the eight amendment.

With just an hour into the count no official figures have been released however indicators are showing a decisive 'YES' vote emerging from boxes from Nenagh and Roscrea.

Counting began just after 9am this morning in the Presentation Secondary School Thurles, the county centre for the constituency, with a result expected sometime mid-afternoon.

Turnout at the polls on Friday is estimated to have reached nearly 60 percent at many voting centres across the county of the 122,700 people registered to vote in Tipperary. At the close of polling last night, turnout reportedly stood at 65 percent at some voting centres in Nenagh.

An exit poll released by the Irish Times last night suggests the country has voted with a resounding 'Yes' in the abortion referendum. The newspaper commissioned the poll which gauged the votes of 4,000 people leaving polling stations at 160 different locations, encompassing all 26 counties.
