Nineteen Carrick-on-Suir town centre buildings to get facelift with help of heritage grants

The owners of 19 buildings in Carrick-on-Suir town centre have signed up to receive Historic Towns Initiative grants to upgrade the appearance of the properties  this summer. 

Thirty-eight buildings on Main Street and the top of Bridge Street were eligible to receive a slice of the €130,000 funding the town is receiving under this scheme.  Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Administrator Martin Nolan confirmed that the owners of 19 of these buildings have applied for the grant aid. 

The deadline for the submission of grant applications to the Co. Council was May 28. Mr Nolan said a heritage architect has been appointed to supervise the works that will be carried out on the old buildings. 

The money will assist property owners to paint and clean their buildings, maintain and repair gutters, sash windows, chimneys, signage, roof slates and other minor structural improvement works. The renovations must be completed by November. 

The Heritage Council is providing €110,000 of the funding under the scheme while Tipperary Co. Council has allocated a further €20,000. A further €28,000 for the upgrading of the buildings is to be put up by the property owners.
