Newtown Upper NS past pupil Bill Cronin, aged 97, Bishop of Waterford & Lismore Alphonsus Cullinan.
Newtown Upper National School marked the 150th anniversary of its foundation with a midsummer Mass of thanks and remembrance celebrated by the Bishop of Waterford & Lismore Most Rev. Alphonsus Cullinan.
The four-teacher school that has educated generations of children from Faugheen, the Slate Quarries and Ahenny near Carrick-on-Suir is one of the oldest in Co. Tipperary.
Part of the school, which boasts 56 pupils, is still based in the original 1868 building with an extension built around it.
The anniversary Mass on Friday, June 22 was attended by more than 200 people including current and past pupils, staff, parents, neighbours and friends. Past pupils travelled from as far as Donegal and Dundalk for the ceremony.
