Singer/songwriter John Spillane hosts workshop for young musicians near Carrick-on-Suir

Cork singer/songwriter John Spillane guided 25 young musicians through a masterclass in traditional Irish songs and songwriting at Rathgormack Community & Hiking Centre. 

The two-time Meteor award winner hosted the songwriting and music workshop for the tin whistle, fiddle and button accordian players of Rathgormack's Ceol Craobh Crotaigh Comhaltas group on Thursday afternoon, June 28. 

The Comhaltas musicians, aged between 6 and 15 years, played traditional Irish airs for Mr Spillane and tried their hand at songwriting. 

Mr Spillane introduced the children to much loved traditional Irish songs like "An Poc ar Buille", Báidín Fhelimi and "Trasna na dTonnta", which he recorded on his hit 2008 album "Irish Songs We Learned at School". 

And he also sang some of his own songs during the three and a half hour long workshop including the popular "Dunnes Stores Girl". 

Ceol Craobh Crotaigh musicians will be performing again at the Comeraghs Wild Festival's "Hoolie in The Hills" event a Rathgormack Community Centre this Saturday, July 14 at 8pm.
