CAPTION: Ursuline Leaving Cert students Gráinne O’Donnell, Karen Campion, Louise Creagh and Louise Hickey with the cheque they got from ABP Cahir for their prized Irish Angus cattle. They won these as calves at the National Ploughing Championships, 2021. The group is one of five national finalists in the Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition
On Wednesday, November 9, Ursuline Leaving Certs Louise Hickey, Louise Creagh, Gráinne O’Donnell, and Karen Campion undertook one of the last legs in their Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition with a trip to ABP in Cahir.
Here the girls handed over their five Irish Angus cattle, whom they had fed, cared for and raised since they won them as calves at the National Ploughing Championships in 2021.
The visit to the Cahir factory on Wednesday helped them to gain a better understanding of the farm-to-fork strategy implemented by An Bord Bia.
The team have been directly involved in every stage of the process that brought the Irish Angus calves from the field to the supermarket shelf and the consumer.
As well as getting a clear insight into the meat-processing industry, the girls also picked up a cheque for their five fully grown Angus cattle in plenty of time for the Christmas shopping season.
Many thanks to Louise Creagh’s father, Tom, who gave the five Angus calves a home and helped the students look after their prized livestock.
The team will now finish their written project for December and have their last interview in January.
The overall winner will be announced in Croke Park in March.
Best of luck to them as they undertake the final stages of the competition.
