WILDFLOWER POWER: Here is some of what Tipperary communities did to promote biodiversity this year

Almost all Tipperary municipal districts installed pollinator-friendly areas this year, according to a review by the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan.

Nenagh MD reported a major planting programme with 2,267 plants and 39 trees planted in John’s Lane car park and 3,683 plants and trees in Newport Town Park.

In Clonmel, wildflower corridors are encouraged at roundabouts and sections of the N24.

The council offered support with the development of pollinator areas being developed in conjunction with Clonmel Tidy Towns at Loreto Park, St Stephen’s Place, Mulcahy Park and Denis Burke Park.

The Thurles-Templemore district began rewilding roundabouts and approaching roads, only cutting once this year in September.

They also planted pollinator-friendly plants in the rainwater garden in the Parnell Street car park.

Cahir Tidy Towns and local TY students planted an orchard, and areas of Inch field were zoned as ‘pollinator-friendly biodiversity corridors’.

All of these initiatives are contained in the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan Council Partners Review for 2022.

Local Authorities update the initiative annually on what they and communities are doing to promote biodiversity.

Other highlights from the Tipperary update included the maintenance of the Nenagh River Walk without pesticides, the Three Bees Biodiversity Festival and the launch of the Landscaping and Biodiversity plan in Tipperary Town.
