Well-known Clonmel man celebrates his birthday at evening Mass

Birthday wishes are extended to Eddie Sweetman, who served as sacristan in St Mary’s parish in Irishtown, Clonmel for more than 40 years.

Eddie recently celebrated his 91st birthday by attending evening Mass with members of his family.

Fr Billy Meehan, Parish Priest of St Mary’s, stated “We are all aware of the great affection Eddie is held in by all our parishioners. During his 40 years of service as sacristan, Eddie has given unqualified service and dedication.

He was always available to listen to parishioners’ anxieties and queries , and was an immense support to all the priests who served in the parish over the last 40 years.

“He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the people of the parish, and was a constant source of information to the priests. He is above all a deeply spiritual person, always willing to give up his time and knowledge to the people.

“One of the lasting impressions I have of Eddie is him sitting on the side seats of the Sanctuary, deep in prayer and reflection and praying all the Novenas and prayer cards stacked in his little black prayer book.

“Eddie, you were very much part of our parish strategy and initiatives. Your loyalty, prayer, welcome and concern will never be forgotten.

“Let’s hope and pray that you will enjoy many more years of health and happiness, and that you will be present with us for many more years to come.”
