Hardy Mooreabbey athletes complete 28km Moonlight Mountain Trail Run - but no moon in sight!

Denis Dunne, Des Lane and Patricia Ryan after the Ballyhoura Moonlight Trail Challenge last Friday night

Five hardy club souls headed out last Friday night from Scoil Pol in Kilfinane in search of the moonlight on a trail challenge aptly named the Ballyhoura Moonlight Trail Challenge, because it takes place on the first Friday of the year when the moon is at its fullest in the sky.

The Ballyhoura Moonlight Challenge is a 28 kilometre course taking in many of the local woodlands and challenging climbs, including Seefin Mountain. Seefin is a mountain near the southern border of County Limerick. At 528 metres it is the highest summit in the Ballyhoura Mountains.

Unfortunately, due to the atrocious weather conditions the moonlight was hard to find by our five brave souls and the nearly 200 other competitors.

Heading home across the finish line by head torch light instead of moonlight were Kevin Lenihan, Robert Cunningham, Des Lane, Denis Dunne and our only brave lady Patricia Ryan. Putting in a volunteering stint on the night was Tom Blackburn.
