Clonmel High School bow out of Mungret Shield in defeat to Midleton College

Our Under 16 rugby team fell short in this Munster quarter final played in Midleton College last week. While the High School dominated the first half, they could only produce one try, while the Cork school ran in three second half tries to progress to the semi-final.

The High School began very well, with early dominance of possession and territory. A kick to the corner from a penalty allowed the High School to set up a rolling maul and Sam O’Loughlin touched down to score the first try of the game.

The High School pressed for a second try but the Midleton defence held. The High School missed a penalty with a minute left in the first half. Midleton worked their way down the pitch to score a try to leave the match tied at five points each at the break.

Unfortunately, the High School could not reassert their dominance in the second half and Midleton College ran in three more tries.

The High School’s efforts were rewarded with a good try by Oisin Amos, converted by Cailean Morrison, leaving the final score 22-12 to Midleton College.

This brings our Under 16s season to a conclusion, although many of the panel are Under 15 and will continue with our Cleary Cup campaign.

Our Under 14 team had a comprehensive win over Midleton College in Midleton last Thursday. The match gave an opportunity to our large panel to practise everything they have been learning at training. There were some excellent tries and everyone had lots of fun.
