Moyne is the venue for this year’s County Novice Women 3k and Men’s 6k Road Championships on this Sunday, February 19. The County Board is indebted to Moyne AC for promoting these championship races over the past number of years. Moyne has promoted these championship races over two very good routes since 2014 and the athletes are very familiar with the routes. Eligibility for this year’s races is that athletes must be 19 years of age on December 31, 2023.

Last year the County Novice Women’s champion was Maire Claire McCarthy from Clonmel AC, as she led her club to the gold medals. Competition will once again be very keen this year with a number of athletes vying for the top spot.

Athletes like Suzanne Shine of Clonmel AC will be hoping to do the county novice double, having won the County Cross Country title a few months ago. She can expect good competition from athletes including Elaine Horgan and Aisling English of Clonmel AC, Mary Keane of Dundrum AC, Margaret Meehan of Templemore AC, Deirdre Ryan of Thurles Crokes and Marie O’Shea of Mooreabbey Milers.

As this is the first County Road race of the year, don’t be surprised if someone just up from the juvenile ranks competes.

In the team event Clonmel will be aiming to retain the title, as they are going for five in a row. They will face strong competition from a resurgent Thurles Crokes, Mooreabbey Milers and Dundrum.

The men’s 6k race over the familiar route will also prove competitive. Last year the County Novice Men’s Champion was Mossy Bracken of Moycarkey Coolcroo. Last year Aaron O’Donnell and Dermot Gorman, both of Carrick-on- Suir, were second and third. Both these athletes are going well at the moment and are well capable of winning this coveted title in Moyne.

Other athletes vying for a podium place include Barry Hartnett and Kieran Lees, both of Mooreabbey Milers, Joey Feery of Clonmel and John Treacy of Thurles Crokes.

The inter club competition will also be very competitive. Here we have Carrick-on-Suir defending the title and they will be going all out to retain this title as they can also call upon Eugene O’Keeffe, Barry O’Shea and Keith Fraher. However, Mooreabbey Milers also have their eyes on this cup and they are able to call upon such athletes as Kevin Lenihan, Willie O’Donoghue and Ger Hanley.

Other clubs aiming for a podium place are Moycarkey Coolcroo, Dundrum, Clonmel and Templemore.
