Historical Society lecture will tell amazing story of Second World War survivor

The Main Guard in Clonmel will host the lecture at 8.15pm on Monday night

Dr Bob Jackson will show his documentary on Dr Aidan McCarthy, speak on the background to making it and address the audience at the lecture of Clonmel Historical and Archaeological Society, which will be held this Monday, March 20 in the Main Guard at 8.15pm.

Dr Aidan McCarthy, who served as a doctor with the RAF, was imprisoned by Japanese forces in Java after the fall of Singapore during World War II and survived shipwreck and almost four years of harsh captivity.

He was a prisoner at the Mitsubishi Steel and Irons works in Nagasaki on August 9 1945 when the atomic bomb exploded over the city.

He survived again to return home to County Cork with the samurai sword of the camp commander.

Admission for members is €5 and €7 for non-members. 

Renewals and new memberships taken out in Autumn 2022 and January/February 2023 will expire on December 31 2023.  Renewal or new membership costs €10.
