TRACK & FIELD EVENTS: Congratulations to our junior athletes who travelled to Templemore AC last week with their coach Mr. Kinane to take part in the County Schools Track & Field competitions. With huge numbers of students participating from schools across the county, competition was intense where competitors would have to perform to their very best to have a chance of winning a coveted medal irrespective of the colour. The Mhuire lads competed valiantly however and performed superbly with Luke Thompson winning gold in the Junior Hammer Throw and bronze in the Junior Shot Putt. Thomas Max won silver in the Junior Shot Putt. Adam Phelan won silver in the 800m and High Jump. James Woodlock won silver in the Junior Hurdles. Jeffrey Myles won silver in the Intermediate Shot Putt and bronze in the Intermediate Discus. We wish them all the best as they progress to the upcoming East Munster competition.

TY CAR CARE WORKSHOP: Our Transition Year students took part in a car care workshop where they learnt basic car maintenance and safety skills. Students got hands on experience checking a car for oil and coolant, they learnt where to top up windscreen washer fluid and finally they practiced changing a car wheel. Students also learnt the theory behind jump starting a car and learnt how to tell the conditions of a car tyre. Thanks also to the brave teachers who lent their cars to the students to work on!

SCIFEST: Well done to first year student Jamie Blake who won a highly commended award last Thursday at SciFest in TUS Thurles. Jamie created an App called Waste Watchers to tackle the issue of Food Waste. To use Jamie’s App, you choose a food type you have in your fridge and it gives you a list of recipes to use up this particular food. Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed is immensely proud of Jamie on his hard work over the last few months in preparing his project and bringing it to fruition. Well done also to Ms. Carr who worked diligently in mentoring Jamie with his Waste Watchers project.

CHESS CHAMPION: Last week witnessed the final of our Chess championship for first year students. Ran over several days numbers were whittled down to a final after five rounds where Jamie Elphick & Toby Norris competed against each other as they tried to out manoeuvre one another and bring home the trophy. In an absorbing final between two superb players there could only be one winner that resulted with Jamie being triumphant. Thanks to staff members Mr. Murphy & Mr. Ryan who have facilitated the playing of Chess as an extra curricular activity throughout the academic year that has become hugely popular among students of all ages at Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed.

AVISTA CARE TALK: Many thanks to Catherine and Mary from Avista Care (formerly St. Anne’s Roscrea) who delivered a very interesting and informative presentation to our Health Care and Pre-Nursing students. They outlined the services provided and the potential employment opportunities offered by Avista Care who provide services for people with intellectual disability in Roscrea, Templemore, Thurles and surrounding areas.

LGFA TALK: As part of Active Schools Week in CMCO our girls were treated to the opportunity to hear from arguably the greatest sports person to grace a football field in Womens Gaelic Football ie. Cora Staunton. The former Mayo footballer and AFL (Aussie Rules) star delivered a talk on the importance of Sport in girls lives and Well-being. Feedback from all in attendance who listened to Cora was hugely positive as they were given an insight into the ups & downs of playing sport, the mental and physical benefits as well as the importance of resilience.

BASKETBALL: Congratulations to our 2nd year boys Basketball team who won their Plate semi-final in The Dome Thurles against a formidable  Oaklands CC fro Edenderry by a convincing margin and progress to the Midlands final next week in Portlaoise. Guímis gach rath orthu!

FISHING: Congratulations to TY student Adam Adcock on winning the Munster Juvenile Rivers Fishing Competition recently. Adam now represents the Munster team as captain in the upcoming All-Ireland final. We wish Adam the very best and hopefully he will progress to wear the Green Jacket and represent Ireland in the International competition to take place in the Czech Republic during the summer.
