‘Jersey4life’ is a new initiative by Thurles Sarsfields to remember Dillon Quirke

A new initiative in aid of the Dillon Quirke Foundation is being run by Thurles Sarsfields GAA club. On Saturday the 13th of May a new website will go live with a range of retro jerseys on sale.
This novel idea is set to raise vital funds to ensure children in Ireland are screened for heart conditions.

Thurles Sarsfields’ senior hurler Cian Stakelum is one of the organisers, and he explained the plan: “The idea behind it is that we are gathering up jerseys all over the country. Some jerseys will be sold at a set price and other jerseys will be auctioned which are more high profile ones. So far we have been gathering up the jerseys and seeing who else we can get jerseys off.

“Our plan is to encourage people to go onto the website and buy jerseys or put in a bid. The response has been excellent. We have so many jerseys from Noel McGrath to Alan Tynan to TJ Reid and Tommy Walsh. Also Declan Ryan’s iconic number 14 jersey worn in the 2001 All-Ireland.

“We have Australian Rules jerseys from Daniel Goulding, soccer jerseys from Gareth Bale and we have got an Ireland rugby jersey from when they beat New Zealand. The higher profile ones will be auctioned on the website and we might have a raffle too. There is something for everyone.

“I’m sure Irish pub owners in America, for example, would love to get Larry Corbett’s first ever championship jersey,” he says. The motivation for this to be a success is close to Cian’s heart: “I would have known Dillon through my brother Conor. The only reason the response to the jersey collection has been so good is because of the power of his name.

“As soon as you mention his name to people they immediately want to help. That is a credit to the person he was. We can’t send around the link to the website yet but on Saturday the link will be online and there is a ‘Jersey4life’ Instagram page too. Alternatively you can ask anyone in the Thurles Sarsfields committee who will help out too.”
