Sam Bennett misses out on a spot in the Tour de France

Tipperary's Sam Bennett is not part of Bora-Hansgrohe's team for the 2023 Tour de France which begins next week.

His German team have announced seven of the starting team to take to the roads in Bilbao for the race which begins on the 1st of July.

Bora-Hansgrohe decided on Jordi Meeus as a sprint option ahead of the Tipperary cyclist, and although there is still one more berth on the team available for the July race, they confirmed that it will be a climber that will occupy the final position.

This means that Sam Bennett misses out this time around. It is the second year in a row that the Carrick On Suir sprinter is denied a coveted starting spot in the race.

The news will come as a blow to Bennett who won the Green Points Jersey in 2020 but missed out on 2021 due to a knee injury which proved difficult to shake, before being left out of the team last year.

This time around he was hoping to repeat the feat and go on to claim some stage wins in the race.

The news means there will be no Irish rider at the Tour de France this year as Eddie Dunbar and Ben Healy are injured while Ryan Mullen also misses out on a starting berth.
