Sean Treacy Park in Tipperary Town will host the Seanie Toomey Memorial Tournament on Saturday August 12
The Seanie Toomey Memorial Tournament will be held on Saturday August 12 in Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town.
Seanie Toomey was from Tipperary Town, where he lived all his life. He was very well known in Tipperary Town and surrounding areas through his involvement in the GAA.
Seanie was always interested in Gaelic football and hurling. He played junior football and hurling for Arravale Rovers back in the day and in his later life he was very involved in GAA at referee and coaching level.
He proudly refereed football matches and also refereed schools matches, west Tipperary, county and Munster Colleges football matches. He was very passionate about youth involvement in GAA sports and coached in Tipperary Town.
He always felt that grassroots football and hurling was vital to growing the sport.
Sadly, Seanie passed away last January, at the age of 66. To honour his memory and to acknowledge his very positive impact on GAA in Tipperary Town throughout his life, his family have organised this tournament.
For this first year his family are delighted that four under 17 teams from Arravale Rovers, Cashel King Cormacs, Rockwell Rovers and Bansha/Emly will be competing for the Seanie Toomey Memorial Trophy.
The first game between Arravale Rovers and the Galtee Rovers/Bansha/Emly combo will commence at 1pm.
This will be followed at 2.15 by Cashel King Cormacs against the Rockwell Rovers/Rosegreen combo.
The winners of both matches will go forward to play in the final at 7.15pm.
All matches will take place in Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town.
During his illness, Seanie was excellently cared for in Cluain Arann Nursing Home in Tipperary Town. Now as a way of repaying for all the help and support given to Seanie and his family during this difficult time, it's hoped to raise much-needed funds for Cluain Arann in conjunction with the Seanie Toomey Memorial Trophy.
"As a family, we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received for this tournament. We are so grateful to the four teams that without hesitation offered to participate. We are very fortunate that so many businesses in Tipperary Town have come on board and sponsored this event in various ways.
"Mike O’Brien from Nellie’s Bar has very kindly sponsored the medals and trophy. We have received lots of great spot prizes for our raffle, which are very kindly sponsored by various businesses in Tipperary Town".
To make this a successful fun day of sport, it would be great to see a big turnout.
Under 15s will be admitted free while the adults admission is just €3.
