Tipperary ladies win silver at Track and Field National League final

One of the most exciting events in the Irish athletics calendar took place last Sunday in Tullamore, with the final of the Track and Field National League.

The Tipperary Senior County Ladies athletics team qualified for the final and was one of the fancied teams to lift the title of Premier National League County Champions.

Also included in the final line-up were Galway, Kildare, Louth, Sligo, Cork and Monaghan.

Many of Tipperary’s brightest stars in ladies track and field were competing and they did their county very proud indeed by finishing runners-up, and winning the silver medal for the second consecutive year.

Cork were the surprise winners with 109 points to Tipperary’s 106 and Galway won the bronze medal on 102 points.

Katie Bergin from Moyne AC continued her outstanding season to finish first in both the 100 metres in a very fast time of 11.86 seconds and the 200 metres in a time of 23.83 seconds.

Katie also competed in the 4 x 100 metres relay together with Emma O’Neill (Carrick-on-Suir), Lucy Fitzgerald (Tipperary Town) and Emily Davidson (Nenagh,) who finished a close second to Galway.

The 4 x 400 metres relay team also had an impressive run with Eimear Lynch of Newport, Jennifer O’Leary Nenagh, Katie Bergin Moyne and Dymphna Ryan, Dundrum AC.

Up and coming star Jennifer O’Leary from Nenagh AC won both the 800 metres in the very fast time of 2:17.18 and also the 1,500 metres in a time of 4:44.18.

Kaley Cozens from Templemore AC had a big performance in the hammer throw, winning it in a distance of 38.86 metres.

Dymphna Ryan from Dundrum AC had a great run in the 3,000 metres for Tipperary in a time of 10:02.85, as had Jade Barry, Carrick-on-Suir, in the javelin throw with a distance of 32.47 metres.

Other members of the Tipperary team included Emma O’Neill (Carrick-on-Suir) triple jump, Grace Fitzgerald (Tipperary Town) long jump, Clodagh Donohoe (Nenagh) high jump and pole vault, Rachel O’Shea (Carrick-on-Suir) 100 metres hurdles, Lorna O’Shea (Carrick-on-Suir) 400 metres hurdles, Fiona Hennessy (Templemore) WFD and the discus, Margaret Mary Grace (Nenagh) 1,500 metres walk, Eimear Lynch (Newport) 400 metres.
