The Source in Thurles is the venue for this important forum
A public forum to discuss the local tourism industry will be held in The Source, Thurles on Tuesday evening next, Sept 19th, starting at 7 p.m.
It is being organized by the Tipperary Heartlands Tourism Group, an alliance of about a dozen local tourism attractions run on a voluntary basis.
It is open to the public and all are welcome. The purpose of the forum is to discuss the problems facing tourism in the area, most of which we know by now, the opportunities available and the support that is required.
It will provide a platform for all who are involved in providing services and facilities for tourists, as well as visitor attractions in the Mid-Tipperary area, to give their views and opinions on how the product can be improved.
It will also allow the providers to share the difficulties they face. As well as the obvious providers it is hoped that the Forum will have representatives present and contributing from additional bodies such as publicans, accommodation providers, music
festival organisers, walking groups, sporting organisations, community associations, transport
providers among others.
Because it is important to have people present, who are directly involved in the promotion of tourism in the area and with a knowledge of the subject, it is intended to have a few speakers on the night to address the meeting, including John Gerard O’Dwyer and the new chairman of Tipperary County Council, Ger Darcy, who stated in his address on taking office recently, that his priority in office will be the promotion of tourism in the county.
While the input of experts is helpful, the main thrust of the evening will be to get the input of those attending and to convey to the public and tourism authorities the importance of tourism locally, as well as the problems and opportunities in the sector locally.
The Mid-Tipperary area has much to entertain the visitor. While many of us are well aware of this, the problem is getting the message out to people from outside the area.
There is also the fact that we have to compete with many areas in the county and country that have long-time established attractions and which have a head start in publicity and marketing.
We have got to work harder to make Mid-Tipperary better known, a place to be proud of and an attractive place to visit. This Forum is the place you can help to make that possible.
