CAMOGIE ROUND UP: Excellent Sarsfields dispatch Burgess Duharra in high scoring contest

Senior Championship

The Drom-Inch forward line were in lethal form on Sunday morning as they fired 6-23 past Nenagh Eire Og. Eimear McGrath finished with 2-9 (5 frees) with Miriam Campion, Mary Burke and Katie O’Dwyer (2) all raising green flags.

Credit to Nenagh Eire Og they fought to the end and breached the Drom-Inch rear-guard on a number of occasions to score 3-8 of their own with the impressive Caroline Browne finishing with 2-2. In the other game in the group, Burgess Duharra scored 2-17 but still finished on the losing side to a Karen Kennedy-led Thurles Sarsfields.

Karen was her usual influential self and finished with a hat trick to help Thurles to a five-point win 5-13 to 2-17. For Burgess Duharra  Jenny Grace finished top scorer with nine points (8 frees).

In group 2 three consecutive goals without reply in the first half between 20th and 28th minute for Clonoulty killed the game as a contest against Borris-Ileigh. The homeside were without the injured Nicole Walsh and Katie Fitzgerald while Clonoulty Rossmore lined out without the services of Cait Devane. For Clonoulty Eimear Bourke was this week’s outstanding player scoring 3-3 from play while Courtney Ryan finished with 1-4 from centre forward.

For Borris-Ileigh 16-year-old Therese Groome made her senior debut at corner forward and finished with a point from play. The final score was 4-12 to 0-9. On Thursday evening a quickly taken free by Ereena Fryday found the back of the net and helped Kichams to an impressive victory over neighbours Eire Og Annacarty on a final scoreline of 1-10 to 0-11.

With only a three-day turn around Knockavilla then met Cashel in Cashel on Sunday evening for a crunch winner takes tie to secure a quarter-final spot. Cashel started brightest and led 1-03 to no score after just five minutes with Ciara Dwan getting the goal. Kickhams soon settled but at halftime Cashel looked to be in control with a six-point lead, 1-8 to 0-5.

A hugely determined Knockavilla side emerged in the second half and with Eimear Heffernan giving an exhibition of free taking (12 points in total) they continued to chip away on Cashel’s lead. Nicole Shelly was very good for Cashel curbing the influence of Ereena Fryday.

Others however really stood up for Kickhams with the likes of Millie Kelly finishing with two points from play while Caoimhe McCarthy was also excellent. In the end it finished all square 1-12 to 0-15.
