Clogheen’s Rory Kearney, along with Beibhinn Butler (Clonmel) is part of the Irish team heading to Atlanta, USA
Two Clonmel-based kayakers, Rory Kearney and Beibhinn Butler, are part of the Irish team heading to the International Canoe Federation (ICF) Canoe Freestyle World Championships in Atlanta, United States, which start on Monday October 9.
Rory Kearney, from Clogheen, continued his very successful season with victory in the Under 18 European Open Freestyle Championships in Nottingham at the end of August.
Fellow Rockwell College schoolmate, Gilles Kearney (no relation to Rory) from Clonmel, also enjoyed success with an eighth place finish in the European intermediate championships in Nottingham and he now progresses to elite junior level.
Rory Kearney is a member of the Irish Under 18 team that will compete in the world championships in Atlanta.
He will be joined in Georgia by Beibhinn Butler, who has moved seamlessly from a very successful junior campaign to claim a place on the Irish ladies team.
Gilles, Rory and Beibhinn are members of the South-East Freestyle Club, which has its base at Suir Island, Clonmel.
The world championships in Atlanta are sanctioned by the International Canoe Federation and are returning to North America after almost a decade.
More than 300 kayakers from 20 countries will take part.
