Two amateur actors who starred in productions by Clonmel Theatre Guild have come together to present a two-man play this weekend to raise funds for a worthy cause.

The Quiet Land will be staged by Ger Meagher from Ardfinnan and Ricky Dunne from Clonmel at Newcastle Community Hall on this Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19.

All proceeds will be donated to Positive Steps Together, which provides a service for people with intellectual disabilities over the age of 18.

Ger Meagher’s daughter Ciara is one of those people who benefit from Positive Steps Together, which is run by volunteers in conjunction with the Brothers of Charity and which recently acquired charitable status.

Activities are held at the community hall in Newcastle.

“Positive Steps Together is a wonderful service for people with intellectual disabilities when they leave school and move to another level,” says Ger Meagher.

“A bus is available for service users and outings are organised.

“They have somewhere to go every day and they have fulfilment in their lives. It makes a big difference”.

With plans to eventually build a centre, fundraising events organised for the charity have included a golf classic, a table quiz in Goatenbridge and an auction held in Ballymacarbry last year.

Meanwhile, The Quiet Land is a play that was written by Malachy McKenna in 2014. It focuses on the ups and downs of life for elderly people in rural Ireland.

The plot is centred around one of the characters being discharged from hospital and his friend going to visit him.

People are reminded that there is a limited capacity at Newcastle Community Hall.

Tickets, at €10 each, are on sale from O’Dwyers and McCarras in Newcastle and Burkes shop in Ardfinnan.

The production is also supported by Mr Mister Menswear in Cahir and Cashel.

The show starts at 8pm each night and a fundraising raffle will also be held.
