Twenty-two new council homes in Carrick-on-Suir to become available next year

Twenty-two new council homes in Carrick-on-Suir will become available for allocation to people on the social housing waiting list between January and next summer.

That’s what Shaun Lonergan of Tipperary County Council’s Housing Section told councillors at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s November meeting.

The council has purchased the 22 new homes being built at the rear of St Mary’s Cemetery, Carrickbeg under the Turnkey Properties Acquisition scheme where local authorities buy suitable ready to let houses from property developers for social housing.

Carrick MD Cathaoirleach Cllr Kieran Bourke asked at the meeting for an accurate timeframe for when the first homes will be ready to allocate to tenants as the council previously indicated it would be in the last quarter of this year, which is now. He also requested a breakdown of the size of the new homes.

He pointed out that constituents have been coming into his office enquiring about the houses.

Mr Lonergan responded that there had been a delay on site with the contractor and the first nine homes were now due to be completed by the end of the year and allocated in January.

They will comprise five two-bedroom bungalows and four two-storey, three-bedroom homes.

The remaining 13 homes were due to be ready next summer.

They included two bungalows and 11 two-storey family style homes.

Cllr Bourke welcomed the fact that a “fair amount” of properties in Carrick have been brought into the social housing system in the past two years. But while his hometown was doing quite well, he stressed it still needed a lot more housing.
