LATEST: Hundreds of locals pack church as stars come out to say farewell to Shane MacGowan

Imelda May and Declan O'Rourke in St Mary of the Rosary Church for Shane MacGowan's funeral

Hundreds of people have joined some of the leading names in the entertainment world in St Mary of the Rosary Church in Nenagh this afternoon as they bid a final farewell to Shane MacGowan, the legendary singer who passed away on November 30.

Among those arriving were actor Aidan Gillen, musicians Imelda May and Declan O'Rourke, who are due to join the likes of Nick Cave, Glen Hansard, Lisa O'Neill and Sharon Shannon in a musical tribute to MacGowan.

President Michael D Higgins is also due to attend.

Others to attend from the world of politics are Gerry Adams, while locally Deputy Alan Kelly was there, along with district Cathaoirelach Cllr John "Rocky" MacGrath

Johnny Depp is expected to pay a tribute from the altar to Shane.

The eulogy is expected to be delivered by his wife Victoria Mary Clarke.

Shane's funeral is due to take place at 3.30pm.

The chief celebrant will be local parish priest Fr Pat Gilbert.
