Shauna O'Keefe is off to a flyer in the professional ranks
It was a new beginning for Clonmel boxer Shauna O’Keeffe when she entered the ring in London last Friday night for her first professional fight and, much to the joy of her supporters, she came up trumps after a courageous display to win the bout at York Hall.
The lightweight had to work hard throughout in what was her opening professional fight but O’Keeffe kept to her targets and landed the key punches to win the bout against Lithuania’s Vaida Masiokaite.
After six rounds the rising Irish star came out on top against an experienced and dogged, skilful opponent with the referee’s scorecard showing 59 to 55 in the Irishwoman’s favour.
It was a sensational win considering O’Keeffe only turned pro a few short weeks ago but she has settled in well to training across the water and is making serious progress very quickly.
Her trainer Kevin Mitchell, amongst others, has predicted that she's destined for the top and next on the agenda now is some rest and preparation at home in Clonmel for Christmas ahead of her next fight which is likely to take place in London in early February.
