Cashel advanced to the last eight of the Munster Youth Cup with a well-deserved win over reigning champions Midleton of Cork in very difficult conditions at Dixie Currivan Park in Cashel on Saturday afternoon.
The home side began the match playing into the strong wind and started really well, being on top from the early exchanges and hitting the front in the 17th minute when a ball was fired across the edge of the area, and in an attempt to clear it the ball was hooked into his own net by a Midleton defender.
Cashel Town doubled the lead ten minutes later when the visitors failed to clear a corner and after several ricochets the ball ended up at the feet of Pawel Zakowicz, who finished confidently to the net.
After this, the home side dominated proceedings in the middle of the pitch, but were unable to add to their tally before the half time break.
The Cork team came out firing in the second period, but were rocked back shortly before the hour-mark when their defence was caught out by a fantastic pass from Sami Laaksonen to put Callum Butler away. Butler was taken down in the area, and the resulting penalty was finished by Blake Doyle Carroll to extend his side’s lead to three goals.
The Cork team kept coming, however, and were given a sliver of hope on 65 minutes with a goal from Josh Dempsey after a goalmouth scramble.
The visitors continued to try and press but were easily snuffed out by the Cashel Town defence and midfield.
On the stroke of full-time, Cashel’s Ciaran Byrnes put the cherry on the top of an excellent performance when he dispossessed a defender and rounded the goalkeeper before finishing calmly to the net and sparking off wild celebrations in the home dugout.
