Tipperary TD pays tribute to former Taoiseach after passing due to long illness

Former Taioseach John Bruton passed away recently

Tipperary TD Michael Lowry was deeply saddened to learn of the passing on Tuesday of a colleague and former Taoiseach John Bruton who passed away recently after a long illness.

Deputy Lowry said: “John was a man of exceptional intellect and ability. He had a curiosity about world affairs. He read and took advice to ensure that he had a full grasp and understanding of even the most complex issues.

“He was an outstanding colleague. Always available to offer support and encouragement. He was genuine sincere and unassuming. He was a man of high values and enormous integrity.

“He gave a lifetime of commitment to Fine Gael and was an outstanding ambassador for his beloved country. He served the people of Meath and Ireland with honour and distinction.

“My sympathy to his wife Finola who was central to his life and his career. He will be greatly missed by his family.”

Mr Bruton was Taoiseach from 1994 to 1997 when he led the rainbow coalition government of Fine Gael, Labour and Democratic Left.

He was leader of Fine Gael from 1990 to 31 January, 2001.

He was re-elected to the Dáil in May 2002 and resigned his seat on 31 October, 2004, and was appointed as the EU Ambassador to the United States the following month.

In a statement following his passing, Mr Bruton's family said: "It is with deep sadness we wish to announce the death of former Taoiseach John Bruton.

"He died peacefully in the Mater Private Hospital in Dublin, surrounded by his loving family, early this morning following a long illness.

""He was a good husband, a good father and a true patriot.

"We will miss him greatly.

"John is survived by his wife, Finola, son Matthew and daughters; Juliana, Emily and Mary-Elizabeth, grandchildren, sons-in-law, his brother, Richard and sister, Mary, nieces, nephews, many cousins and extended family."
