Semple Stadium is set to reopen following a spring of extensive work at the iconic venue

The National Hurling League final between Clare and Kilkenny will be played in Thurles

FBD Semple Stadium has been closed for a number of weeks but it has undergone extensive work and is now ready to unveiled for the National Hurling League final final. The title decider is set to be played in the home of hurling on Saturday April 6th at 7.15pm.

Clare, who overcame a timid effort from the Tipperary hurlers on Sunday last, will fancy their chances against Kilkenny after beating Derek Lyng's side in their recent league encounter at Ennis. The Kilkenny team walloped All-Ireland champions Limerick on Leeside last Saturday evening, with TJ Reid proving once again that age is no barrier when it comes to hurling.

The veteran Ballyhale star fired in an important goal, and also contributed in many ways setting up other vital plays, ensuring that Kilkenny finally beat Limerick after suffering successive beatings from Limerick in the league and championship last season.

Over recent weeks Thurles doors have been closed to Tipperary teams and other sides that looked to play there owing to the consistent rainy days this spring. After extensive work the hallowed turf is almost ready to open it’s doors once again.

There have been no games played there since the National Football League Division 4 game between Tipperary and Laois took place there on Sunday, February 25th.

The pitch had taken a battering from the weather and a huge number of games all spring and in last seasons club championships.

It was closed off following heavy rainfall and new drains at the Killinan End have since been put in place to address issues with the surface and to repair the surface.

The National Hurling League final is likely to be the first game taking place there once it reopens, however currently the Tipperary minor hurlers and footballers are pencilled in to play in Semple Stadium in their championship encounters next week.

The matches are due to be home games for Tipperary, but Thurles hasn't been confirmed as the venue so it remains to be seen where those fixtures will take place.
