New Tipperary county football championship structure will be decided at meeting in Thurles tonight

The club championship season in Tipperary is already underway with clubs currently fielding teams in the county leagues but ahead of the new look club football championship, the structure of this year’s county football championships is up for decision this evening at a County Board meeting.

Clonmel Commercials have been far too strong for most challengers in recent years and now there is one less team in the championship as, in recent weeks, Drom-Inch withdrew from the senior club championship as they felt they weren't in a position to field a team from their playing pool and compete in the competition.

The struggle to field a team in the competition and withdrawal of the rural GAA club - based outside Thurles - has meant that the previously proposed format is redundant thereby altering the current structure of the championship.

The recent upheaval has meant that there will now be 13 teams competing for the O'Dwyer cup at senior level later in the year which is an uneven number, meaning that the competition must be adapted from the original format to ensure a fair competition for the competing teams.

The item will be high on the agenda and is set to be discussed at tonight's meeting in Thurles. The county committee meeting gets underway in the Dome - beside Semple Stadium - at 7.30pm and a full turnout is expected for it.

The championship structure issue is one that will need careful consideration as the decision on a format must be fast tracked as the draws for the Tipperary hurling and football championships are set to be made on Tipp GAA TV next Wednesday evening - April 3rd - with the first draw getting underway from 8pm.
