Thurles Tidy Towns have recently submitted their entry to the National Tidy Towns Competition for this year. The judge is expected to visit Thurles over the coming weeks and will grade our town under eight different categories.
The Tidy Towns Competition is sponsored by Supervalu every year. Thurles Tidy Towns works closely with Barry’s Supervalu Thurles on various projects throughout the town. For example last year Mr. Tom Barry sponsored two litter bins which have now been installed at both sides of the Railway Bridge.
This was in response to the Railway Field being identified as a litter blackspot and Thurles Tidy Towns carries out cleanups at this location on a regular basis.
Thurles Tidy Towns had a very successful day in Barry’s SuperValu on Saturday May 25th . An information stand was set up with members of Thurles Tidy Towns meeting shoppers to explain the work Thurles Tidy Towns carries out and encouraging more people to get involved in Tidy Towns.
Those present from tidy towns at the information stand included: Tom Barry Proprietor SuperValu, Bridget Martley Chairperson Croke Street Residents Association, Tommy Barrett Chairperson Refresh Thurles, John Lanigan Treasurer, Margaret McCabe, Noreen Lanigan, and Seamus Slattery.
Also this week Seamus Slattery and John Lanigan sowed two trees on the river bank walk from Thomond Road to Slievenamon Road. Nick from Cornwall in England on holiday in the area joined the group and helped with the tree planting. Nick discovered his ancestors in Templemore thanks to local historians and visited his ancestral home there.
