Thirty two year old Brian Hanrahan was on holidays with his father when he was the victim of an attempted mugging

in New Orleans early on Tuesday morning.

Garda Hanrahan, who is based in Newcastlewest in County Limerick, was shot twice in the assault.

His assailant is believed to have demanded money.

Garda Hanrahan was taken to a local hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

New Orleans police said the shooting happened at 05:40 local time on Tuesday at the junction of New Orleans Street and North Tonti Street.
