Sinn Féin made a call before the election to run three candidates in the Cashel-Tipperary LEA but just one got elected following two days of counting votes.
Last time out in 2019 Tony Black won a seat at the expense of Martin Browne. While disappointed back then, little did Martin know he would end up in the General Election and in that he ended up getting elected to Dáil Éireann.
This time out Tony lost his seat to Annmarie Ryan (who had been elected as an Independent in 2019) and while it was close, the party ended up with just one seat this time out again.
“I thought I ran a good campaign. Myself and Annemarie Ryan ran the campaign together,” Tony Black said at the Count Centre in Thurles.
“We are very much concious that we wanted to be viewed as a team as we were together for five years on Tipperary County Council.
“We covered a lot of ground but we had a low turnout in our home area and that impacted on us in a small bit.
“We had good engagement on the doorstep and got good feedback but I suppose it wasn’t our day for the two of us.”
While Annemarie took the seat, Tony just narrowly missed out. Molly Browne also ran for Sinn Fein in the contest but didn’t manage to garner enough traction.
She said this is a long term project for her: “I put my name forward and ended up being picked because others had to pull out so it was a short campaign but I did try my best.
“Hopefully it starts tomorrow for five years time. I have always been some way involved in politics with my father when I was out canvassing with him for many years.
“My uncle Mickey was the same story, so politicians were in the family.” Speaking at the Count Centre, Molly’s father Martin Browne TD said that “as a party we want people to change and change with us”.
“We need to put more candidates out there. In 2019 I was the sitting councillor, we insisted on running Tony Black, we held the one seat, this time around we had Tony and Annemarie as councillors and Molly fair play to her, ran as well.
“Maybe it will work out for her in another way after this; the way it worked out for me after 2019,” Martin said.
