It 'could have been a hell of a lot worse' - Man charged after knifing Tipperary garda

A man has been charged following the serious assault of a Garda in Tipperary.

According to An Garda Síochána, an officer was dispatched to the scene of an incident in Clogheen on June 18, where he was attacked by a man aged in his 40s.

The officer received treatment for his injuries - which were non-life threatening - following the incident.

Gardaí confirmed the attacker appeared before Carrick on Suir District Court on June 19.

According to Tipp FM, the weapon used against the Garda was a knife.

A spokesperson for the Garda Representative Association for Tipperary, Richard Kennedy, told Tipp Today that an intervening member of the public "averted a more serious incident".

He said, "Thanks to a passer-by who when the knife became loose during the course of the incident threw it away and allowed the member not to be badly injured – he was injured – but not as badly as the situation could have been.

"He has some physical injuries but mentally I’m sure it will take him a good length of time to bounce back. A very, very frightening situation that could have been a hell of a lot worse."

A statement released to Tipperary Live by An Garda Síochána reads, "Gardaí charged a man following an assault in Clogheen, County Tipperary on June 18, 2024. The male (40s) appeared before Carrick on Suir District Court on June 19 2024.

"A member of An Garda Síochána received medical attention following this incident. His injuries are non-life threatening."
