Kyle Hayes is due to appear before Mallow District Court charged with dangerous driving
Four time All-Star Limerick hurler Kyle Hayes is due back in court after being charged with dangerous driving.
The Kildimo man was arrested in Mallow on Sunday, July 14, after being pulled over by Gardai. It is alleged he drove at up to 150kmh (93mph) in a 100kmh (62mph) speed zone.
It is understood Mr Hayes was making his way back from Cork to Limerick at the time.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed that Gardaí in Mallow arrested a man for an alleged road traffic offence on Sunday, July 14.
“The man, aged in his 20s, has since been charged in relation to the incident and is due to appear at Mallow District Court at a later date.
“As this matter is now before the courts there is no further information available. Investigations are ongoing,” said the garda spokesperson.
The offence is contrary to Section 53 of the Road Traffic Act 1961. If a person is convicted of dangerous driving, they could be fined up to €5,000, or be sent to prison for up to six months, or both.
Mr Hayes received a two-year suspended sentence in March for two counts of violent disorder after he was found guilty following a trial at Limerick Circuit Court. The incidents occurred inside and outside the Icon nightclub in Limerick city in the early hours of October 29, 2019.
The jury found Mr Hayes not guilty of assault causing harm.
The five-time All-Ireland winner was being spoken of as a potential Hurler of the Year before Limerick’s defeat to Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final.
It is not known if the case against Mr Hayes, who is on station bail, will be up in court prior to the courts' summer recess in the month of August.
