Coláiste Mhuire Co-Ed witnessed the end of an era on October 25th as the hugely popular and brilliant Ms. Josephine Cahill retired after 41 years of teaching.
Josephine, or Seosaimhín Ní Chathail as she is equally well known, spent most of her teaching career in Coláiste Mhuire (previously Gairmscoil Mhuire and Thurles Vocational School).
When one tries to summarise the career of Josephine, one firstly has to acknowledge that we are talking about somebody who was an incredible teacher and communicator in the classroom. She always worked so hard to get the best out of every student and taught with a passion her subjects Irish and Maths.
In particular, her command of the Irish language or líofacht na Gaeilge was extraordinary where her nathanna cainte, vocabulary, seanfhocail and pure love of the Irish language was something to behold.
Josephine’s attention to detail was incredible and she instilled a love of the Irish language in her classes. To her comhmhúinteoirí i Roinn na Gaeilge at Coláiste Mhuire we will seriously miss her, our own ‘Banríon na Roinne’.
Our sojourns to Sos Beag where Josephine would enjoy a “one shot latté agus sconna le do thoil” were occasions of great fun and laughter during an otherwise busy schoolday!
During her years in Coláiste Mhuire, Seosaimhín was a brilliant friend to all idir óg agus aosta. Age didn’t matter, there was a warmth, a friendship, a kindness, a wisdom and somebody you could always confide in and rely on.
Social events, school tours and staff outings were also occasions that Josephine revelled in where she would be the first to turn up and the last to go home and we will miss her absence, wit and infectious laughter on these great days.
No doubt, Josephine will be relishing retirement with trips to her beloved West Kerry Gaeltacht of Corca Dhuibhne, trips to Scotland plus numerous other places on the planet yet to be visited!
Ní ró-mhinic sa saol a mbuailtear le daoine cosúil le Seosaimhín Ní Chathail. Tá an t-ádh dearg linn go raibh sí mar chuid d’ár saol anseo i gColáiste Mhuire thar na blianta. Míle buíochas as do chineáltas, do chomhairle agus do chairdeas agus guímis gach rath ort sa todhchaí.
Le cúnamh Dé beidh go leor laethanta eile againn le one shot lattes agus sconnaí timpeall an baile, a Sheosaimhín!
