LOCAL HERO: Elderly Tipperary man wins deserved Carer of the Year award

Family Carers Ireland, the national charity supporting family carers across the country, has named Clonmel’s Jim Roche as the Netwatch Tipperary Family Carer of the Year.

At 86, Jim has shown remarkable dedication in caring for his wife, Nuala, 84, even as he faces his own health challenges.

Nearly three years ago, Jim experienced several severe heart attacks, leading to a triple bypass and extended hospital stays due to COVID complications.

A former cyclist, Jim faced limited mobility but was determined to stay active in caring for Nuala, who around this time began to show signs of dementia and was later diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

After a brief period in residential care, Jim saw that she was most comfortable at home and worked to bring her back, committing to managing her daily care himself.

Today, Jim continues to prioritize Nuala’s comfort and well-being, demonstrating the commitment that has defined their 63 years of marriage. His determination and resilience serve as a testament to the critical role family carers play in Ireland.

The Netwatch Family Carer of the Year awards, now in their 17th year, aim to honor carers across Ireland and to spotlight the need for more State support. Family carers often step in where formal support systems fall short, yet they frequently lack access to sufficient financial assistance, respite, and vital therapies.

There are over 500,000 family carers in Ireland providing essential care to children and adults with additional needs, chronic illnesses, and other challenges. These carers collectively contribute 19 million hours of unpaid work each week, which, if provided by the State, would cost an estimated €20 billion annually.

Richie Molloy, Community Support Manager with Family Carers Ireland, emphasized the importance of these awards: “The Netwatch Family Carer of the Year awards bring attention to the vital role family carers play in our society. Their work is essential, yet too often goes unrecognized. As a society, we need to ensure they are properly supported to care safely for loved ones at home.”

Netwatch Brand Ambassador and former rugby player Mick Galwey echoed this sentiment, saying: “Family carers show incredible commitment day after day. Whether it’s a mother caring for a child with additional needs or a young carer supporting a parent, their dedication is inspiring. These awards are a way to acknowledge their hard work and let them know we see their efforts.”

Jim was presented with a €500 voucher by Catherine Murphy, President of the Lions Club, as a token of recognition for his work.

Jim Roche’s story is a reminder of the many family carers in Ireland who, often without much support, step up to care for those they love. These awards highlight not only their contributions but the importance of providing them with the recognition and resources they need.
