A vacant seat has arisen on Clonmel Borough Council following the election f Michael Murphy to Dáil Eireann

Once it became certain that Fine Gael’s Michael Murphy would take a seat in the Dáil for the Tipperary South constituency on Sunday others had their eye on a more local vacancy that will arise.

As a result of his election Michael Murphy will now have to vacate his position as Mayor of Clonmel and his seat on Clonmel Borough Council as well as his seat on Tipperary County Council.

A number of people, including two former councillors, Tom Acheson and Joe Leahy, are expected to throw their hats into the ring to fill the vacancy.

Other contenders may emerge over the next few days. A special meeting of Clonmel Borough Council will be scheduled to allow the co-option process to start.

Then it will be up to 150 members of Fine Gael in the Clonmel area to select a candidate for the seat.
