Cllr Siobhán Ambrose acknowledged “the enormous amount of work” undertaken by the housing staff of Tipperary County Council
A total of 128 council houses are now under construction in the Clonmel area, it was announced at a meeting of Clonmel Borough District.
Cllr Siobhán Ambrose said that this was very positive news.
She acknowledged “the enormous amount of work” undertaken by the housing staff of Tipperary County Council, and had no doubt that they would hear about more houses under construction in the area in January.
Cllr Ambrose was also delighted that two parties had expressed an interest in providing affordable housing projects.
She said that such affordable schemes would help young people and those in second relationships.
She said that if the issue of student accommodation at the former Kickham Barracks could be sorted out, that would free up more housing.
Cllr Ambrose said that the total of €3.6 million made available in housing grants during the year was the highest allocation outside of the cities.
It meant that older people could stay in their homes for longer.
The level of funding for housing grants was also welcomed by Deputy Mayor Pat English.
He was also pleased that the construction of a scheme of local authority houses had started at a site in Thomas Street in Clonmel.
