The new outdoor chess feature in front of Clonmel Library
There is something deeply heartening about the sight of children gathered around a chess table, their heads bent in concentration, their minds engaged in thoughtful strategy – all while basking in the summer air of their hometown.
In July, Clonmel and Tipperary County Council proudly joined communities across the country in celebrating National Play Day 2025, embracing this year’s theme: ‘The Power of Play’. Funded through the Department of Children, Disability, Equality and Integration (DCDEI), this initiative champions the incredible ability of play to foster both personal development and a stronger, more connected community.

At the heart of Clonmel’s celebration was the unveiling of a new permanent/fixed outdoor chess table and seating at the front entrance of Clonmel Library – a space designed to welcome children, young people and adults alike into the world of playful learning, strategic thinking, and social connection. Already, it has become a vibrant meeting point, where thoughtful silence meets bursts of joyful play.
Thanks to National Play Day 2025 funding, Tipperary County Council were able to not only install this beautiful and functional chess table and seating, but also deliver a series of events that brought children of all ages together through the power of play.
From casual matches to playful instruction, the space quickly became a hub of intergenerational engagement and quiet excitement. The Junior Chess Club in Clonmel were among the first to break in the new board, and their enthusiasm was captured in the joyful scenes photographed during their inaugural outdoor matches.
Clonmel Library, ever at the heart of community development, expressed their delight at the new addition: “Clonmel Library are excited to announce the installation of a beautiful new static chess table and chairs outside the front entrance of the branch. This inviting space is perfect for casual games, friendly competitions or simply enjoying a quiet moment in the fresh air.”
Indeed, this new chess area is more than just a place to play – it represents an inclusive and stimulating space where people of all ages can connect, unwind, and challenge their minds. Whether you're a lifelong chess enthusiast or a curious beginner, the process could not be simpler. With a free library membership – which takes just minutes to set up – players can borrow chess pieces from the library, use them at the outdoor table, and return them when done.
National Play Day 2025 reminds us that play is not a luxury – it is an essential part of childhood, of learning, and of community. Through initiatives like this, Clonmel is making a clear move towards fostering a town that values imagination, interaction, and the joy of shared public spaces.

As we look forward to many more matches under the Tipperary sky, we thank those involved – from the funders and organisers to the children and families who brought the new chess table to life. Let the games begin!
