Tipperary County Council is progressing plans to open a new night shelter in Tipperary town, with a potential building currently under review.
The proposed nine-to-nine facility would provide overnight accommodation for people experiencing homelessness in west Tipperary.
This type of homeless shelter operates overnight, opening at 9pm and providing a place to stay until 9am the next morning.
At the council’s September meeting, Fine Gael councillor John Crosse pressed officials for updates, warning that homelessness is worsening across the county.

He described regularly encountering people sleeping rough, adding that such a shelter could also serve as an alternative for tenants facing eviction from council housing over anti-social behaviour.
According to the Department of Housing, 84 adults in Tipperary accessed emergency accommodation in July, though this figure excludes hidden homelessness such as couch-surfing.
Council officials confirmed that a building in Tipperary town has been identified and is awaiting a structural survey. “If it’s not viable, we’ll keep pursuing options in Tipperary town,” they said, stressing that the shelter is their next priority.
